Teaching Two Targets: Cross-Linguistic Transfer and Pedagogical Decision-Making Among Dual-Language Graduate Instructors of Record

Caroline Amalachukwu Nwafor

Abstract

This review examines how dual-language graduate instructors of record negotiate cross- linguistic transfer while making pedagogical decisions within multilingual and disciplinarily demanding higher-education environments. Its purpose is to clarify how bilingual linguistic resources, teacher cognition, learner diversity and institutional conditions interact to shape instructional practice. Using a structured narrative review of relevant scholarship published across international and African contexts, the study synthesises theoretical and empirical evidence on cross-linguistic influence, translanguaging, sociocultural learning, language- sensitive instruction, disciplinary literacy and professional development. The findings indicate that cross-linguistic transfer is neither uniformly beneficial nor inherently disruptive; its pedagogical value depends on linguistic distance, proficiency, disciplinary demands, instructional objectives and instructors’ capacity to regulate language use strategically. Purposeful translanguaging, differentiated scaffolding and explicit attention to academic language can strengthen conceptual access and classroom participation when integrated with, rather than substituted for, rigorous content instruction. The review further identifies pedagogical decision-making as a dynamic process involving continuous adjustment of language choice, explanation, task design, assessment and feedback according to learner readiness and disciplinary expectations. Institutional language policies, mentoring, professional learning, technological resources and workload arrangements also substantially condition instructors’ ability to implement responsive practices. The study concludes that effective dual-language graduate instruction requires deliberate coordination of linguistic accessibility and disciplinary rigor, supported by reflective and evidence-informed pedagogical judgement. Universities are therefore encouraged to institutionalise sustained language-aware professional development, mentoring and policy guidance. Future research should employ longitudinal, comparative and classroom-based designs to examine evolving instructor practices, disciplinary variation and measurable student outcomes, particularly within underrepresented multilingual higher- education contexts where linguistic diversity remains central to teaching and learning.
