Assessment of Land Management and Sustainable Agricultural Development in Yobe State, Nigeria

Abba Saleh, Tijjani Yahaya Abdullahi, Hassan Audu Ahmed

Abstract

This study assessed land resource management and sustainable agricultural development in Yobe State, Nigeria. It examined the effects of soil conservation practices, water resource management, land-use management, agroforestry and vegetation management, and soil fertility management on sustainable agricultural development. A cross-sectional survey design was used, with primary data collected from farmers through a structured questionnaire and measured on a five-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression in SPSS Version 26. The findings showed that soil conservation practices, land-use management, and agroforestry and vegetation management had significant positive effects on sustainable agricultural development, while water resource management had a positive but insignificant effect. The result for soil fertility management was not reported in the available regression output. The study concludes that effective land resource management is important for improving sustainable agricultural development in Yobe State and recommends stronger extension services, sustainable land-use practices, improved water management, and increased promotion of agroforestry and soil conservation practices.
