Sibling Rivalry in Blended Families: Challenges and Opportunities

Precious Dorcas OLABODE

Abstract

Sibling rivalry in blended families presents a complex dynamic shaped by the household's restructuring of relationships, roles, and identities. Unlike traditional family settings, blended families comprising biological, step and half-siblings often experience heightened tensions due to feelings of insecurity, territorial behavior, and perceived favoritism. As children vie for parental attention, acceptance, and a sense of belonging, rivalry can be intensified by unresolved emotions from previous family structures and factors like age, gender, personality differences, and birth order. This study explores the distinctive causes and challenges of sibling rivalry in blended families, emphasizing the critical role of parental influence. While poor conflict management and favoritism can deepen resentment, intentional and sensitive parenting can transform rivalry into an opportunity for emotional growth, resilience, empathy, and stronger sibling bonds. Ultimately, the research highlights that with thoughtful guidance, the tensions inherent in sibling rivalry can contribute positively to developing a cohesive and supportive family identity.
