Harnessing Student Work Experience Opportunities: A Study of Work Experience Spaces in Vocational and Technical Enterprises in Benue State
Iorhuna Titus Yeke and, Chia Dorcas Ngufan
Abstract
This study investigates the availability, structure, and effectiveness of student work experience opportunities within vocational and technical education (VTE) institutions in Benue State, Nigeria. Recognizing the vital role of practical training in bridging the gap between classroom learning and labor market demands, the research examines key programs such as SIWES, internships, and apprenticeships. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from 170 participants including students, instructors, and enterprise managers through surveys, interviews, and document reviews. Findings reveal that while SIWES is the most widely adopted program, its effectiveness is hampered by inadequate supervision, weak institutional-industry collaboration, and limited program diversity. Students expressed high satisfaction with skill acquisition and hands-on learning but reported low supervision quality and mismatches between training and academic curricula. The study concludes that without targeted reforms, including standardized guidelines, formalized partnerships, and expanded placement opportunities, VTE programs may fail to adequately prepare students for the workforce. It offers practical recommendations aimed at enhancing stakeholder engagement and improving the relevance and impact of work-based learning in VTE institutions.
