Office Ambience Planning as a Mediating Variable of Safety in Tertiary Institutions in Rivers State

Abstract


The study investigated Office Ambience Planning as a Mediating Variable of Safety in Tertiary Institutions in Rivers State. This study adopted descriptive design. The population of the study was a total of 120 secretaries drawn from Ignatius Ajuru university of Education, Rumuolumeni, Capt. Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, and Rivers State College of Health Technology. A sample size of 75 was arrived at using the stratified sampling.The instrument for data collection in this study will be a self-structured questionnaire titled Management of Safety and Health for Tertiary institutions in Rivers State (MSHUSD). The instrument was validated by an expert in Measurement and Evaluation. The study adopted the test-retest method. A pilot test of the instrument was administered to a sample of 20 staff outside the study area. Simple per centage was used to answer the research questions, while chi-square statistical tool was used hypotheses of the study at .05 level of significance. The findings of the study showed that prevention of risks, emergency plans and use of professionals in organization safety issues are inadequate in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. The study concluded that risk prevention, emergency plans and use of professionals are needed to ensure effective ambience as a key variable of office safety. The study recommended among others that office staff should be given adequate safety attention by management of tertiary institutions in Rivers State.
